Early last year, we quietly released our inaugural product range; a set of leather dog accessories, which we’ve rather unimaginatively called ‘The Dog Range’. Over the last 12 months, we have reached hundreds of customers from around the world, some of whom have kindly left us reviews which you can read here. This year, we have made ambitious plans to expand on this range, and introduce new product lines.
Expanding our dog accessory range
We have developed variants of our existing range that are specifically made for smaller dogs. They use thinner and lighter leather straps, and consequently, lighter hardware, which has reduced the overall weight by approximately 58%. They are suited to so-called ‘toy breeds’ such as Dachshunds and Chihuahuas. We are currently on the lookout for models, learn more here.
We have also produced a leash splitter that extends our leash by 31 cm, allowing two dogs to be walked from the same leash.
Last year, we commissioned British illustrator John Broadley, renown for his iconic work with historic private members' club Quo Vadis, to create a ceramic print design for a food and water bowl.
For the production of the bowls, we partnered up with Wiltshire-based pottery studio, John Julian. Set up by sculptor Julian Sainsbury in 2013, all products are hand-thrown, painted and stamped in the UK.
Leather desk and travel accessories
Applying the same thinking as that which gave birth to our dog accessory range, we are working on a range of leather desk and travel accessories which will feature a number of items, including a holdall, backpack, briefcase, wash bag, notepad cover and desk mat to name a few. We are aiming to launch these lines by the end of the year.
And now, for something completely different
Over the past year we have been working on developing a completely new concept; a range of refillable candle vessels. In 2022, homeware retailer Hammonds estimated that some 8 billion candles are disposed of in the UK each year; the second most commonly disposed homeware item.
Candles have seen a surge in popularity these last few years, a trend that is showing no sign of stopping. According to an article published by The Guardian in 2022, John Lewis reported that sales have risen by 5% each year since 2020.
These candles are typically poured into single-use glass, ceramic, or metal containers which can be challenging to recycle. According to Mark Hall, a director of waste management company Business Waste, thousands of these will end up in landfill.
We have teamed up with a London-based candlemaker and a ceramics company based in Sri Lanka to develop this new product, which will consist of a ceramic vessel into which can be inserted soy wax candle refills.
Developing this concept has not come without its challenges. Unlike paraffin wax, soy wax is typically softer which isn’t a problem if the wax is poured directly into the vessel. But in this case, the refills need to be sturdy enough to withstand being shipped from one location to another without being damaged in transit.
All going well, we are aiming to release these at the end of Q2, and are planning to expand on the range to include a number of accessories, scents, as well as different colour and shaped vessels, and different variants, such as outdoor and tea lights.
Building on our transparent manufacturing promise
Inspired by companies like Everlane, we are working hard on making our design, manufacturing and material sourcing process as transparent as possible. Last year, in collaboration with Eleanor Wheeler, we produced a short video clip demonstrating the steps involved in the production of our leather dog harness. We are creating fact sheets for the materials and suppliers we work with, which can be viewed here, with more coming soon.
